How league tables work: points, goal difference and tiebreakers
Teams are ranked by points: three for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. Teams level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, though some leagues look at head-to-head results first.
In short
- Points come firstA win is three points, a draw one and a loss none. The rest only splits teams level on points.
- Then goal differenceGoals scored minus goals conceded, compared only between teams on the same points.
- Then goals scoredIf goal difference is level too, the team that scored more goes higher.
- The organiser settles full tiesWhen every figure is level, the organiser decides who goes through with Place a team.
- Head-to-head is another ruleSome competitions compare results between the tied teams first, so check yours before kickoff.
- Cricket uses net run rateA cricket league gives two points for a win and uses net run rate in place of goal difference.
The tiebreakers, in order
Score My Match uses points, and goals scored, in that order. Other competitions can use different rules, so check yours before kickoff.
Points
The team with more points is higher. Everything below only matters when points are level.
Goal difference
Goals scored minus goals conceded. A team that won 5-0 and lost 0-1 has a goal difference of +4. A team on the same three points that won 1-0 and lost 0-2 has -1, so it sits below.
Goals scored
If goal difference is level too, the team that scored more goals goes higher. It rewards attacking play over sitting on a lead.
Then something agreed in advance
If every figure is level, the table cannot separate the teams, and it says so. Where that decides who goes through, the organiser settles it with Place a team, and the page marks the team as placed by the organiser. Agree how your competition resolves a complete tie before the first game.
Why it works this way
Why not always use head-to-head? Some competitions compare the results between tied teams before their overall goal difference. That is a different rule, not a different way to calculate goal difference. The lab above follows Score My Match's rules.
Run a league with Score My Match
Create the series
Open the series page, choose League, and pick Single round or Home and away. Type the team names, tapping Add team for each one. The form tells you how many games that makes.
Set an organiser password and create it
The Organiser password is what lets you start games. Tap Create series and you get one link for the whole league.
Start each game when it kicks off
Each game starts from the series page and is scored like any other match. Games can run side by side on different pitches, but a team can only be in one unfinished game at a time.
Share one link
Send the series link to the group. It shows every fixture, the live games, the table and a players table with every scorer, and it updates as each game finishes.
The table counts a game only once it has finished, so a result never flickers in and out while a game is still being played. Cricket leagues use the same table, with two points for a win and in place of goal difference.
How many games will you need?
A single round robin has teams × (teams - 1) ÷ 2 games. Four teams play six games; eight teams play 28. Home and away doubles the total.
