Squads and players: rosters, guests and one player across teams
A club keeps one roster of people, and each team’s squad is a selection from it, so somebody who plays for two teams is one player with one set of figures. Names on a kept match are matched to the roster at a calm moment, and a guest who is on no roster is a finished answer, not a gap.
In short
- One roster, many squadsA club keeps one roster, and each team's squad is chosen from it.
- Two teams, one playerSomebody on two squads is one player with one set of figures.
- Names become people onceA manager matches a kept match's names on its Line-up tab with Match names.
- A guest is an answerSomebody on no roster stays on the match as typed, and nothing nags about it.
- History stays as it wasA past match shows the names it recorded, so fixing a spelling never rewrites it.
- No accounts for playersA player is a name on a squad. Accounts are for the people who run the page.
One roster, many squads
A club keeps one roster of people. Each team's squad is a selection from it, which is what makes somebody who turns out for the first team and the veterans one player with one set of figures, not two.
- Hilltop FC to Arjun, on the roster
- Arjun to Hilltop Seniors
- Arjun to Hilltop Vets
Players never need accounts. A player is a name on a squad, and nothing more.
Names become people once
While you score, names are just names, and they are always optional. Once a match is the club's, a manager matches its names to the roster at a calm moment and never from the scoring buttons: on the match's Line-up tab, under Who played, tap Match names. A result with names still to match says so on the club page, and its Edit takes a manager straight there.
Tap who each name was, or New player to add them to the squad of the team that played that side, which is how a club built from saved matches gets its first squad. When a typed name looks like one already on the roster, you are asked whether it is them. It is only an offer: keeping what you typed is always allowed.
A player who is on no roster is a guest. That is a finished answer, not a gap to fill, and nothing nags you about it. Matching is a manager's job because the same save can take a figure out of somebody's career total.
History stays as it was
A past match shows the names it recorded. Fixing a spelling on the roster never rewrites last season's scorecard, and a squad's figures are always worked out from the matches it played.
For a junior team, public pages show a first name and an initial, whatever the roster says.
Questions people ask
About squads and players.
What if the same player is spelled two ways?
When a name looks like one already on the roster, you are asked whether it is them. It is only a suggestion: keeping what you typed is always allowed.
Does fixing a spelling change old scorecards?
No. A past match shows the names it recorded, so last season’s result never rewrites itself.
What is a guest?
Somebody who played but is not on your roster. They stay on the match as typed, and nothing asks you to do more about them.
Do players need accounts?
No. A player is a name on a squad. Accounts are for the people who run the page.
